Lewis University Online MSDS - Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Program (or Graduate Certificate)

Lewis University offers an online master of science in data science (MSDS) in computational biology and bioinformatics and a graduate certificate in the same discipline. Credits earned in the graduate certificate may be applied to the full MSDS degree. The MSDS in computational biology and bioinformatics trains students to analyze and implement solutions from big data through the lens of biology, learning interdisciplinary skills to track diseases in populations and localities, design pharmaceuticals that serve these populations, and analyze and apply genomic data. The focus is on solving problems in the field of healthcare through data science. Students study courses such as statistics and statistical programming, data mining, data analytics, machine learning, and data systems as applied to the life sciences, among other areas.

The graduate certificate also focuses on solving problems in healthcare and can be completed in just 12 months. Students learn how to apply technical skills in biotechnology and data analysis to the development of pharmaceuticals, computational biology, and genetics. The program includes similar courses as the MSDS, including instruction in data mining, data analytics, math for data scientists, computational biology, data systems, and more.

Lewis University is located in Romeoville, Illinois, and offers many excellent online graduate programs in computer science, criminal justice, and organizational leadership. Interested professionals from all backgrounds with a BS degree may apply to the MSDS and graduate certificate programs, as they provide students the mathematical foundation necessary to understand the ins and outs of big data and become a data scientist. Fields open to data scientists include genetics, life sciences, mathematics, botany, biotechnology, information technology, database administration, healthcare, and education.

What to Expect from the MSDS and Graduate Certificate in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Programs

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MSDS and graduate certificate programs must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Prerequisites to the programs include undergraduate coursework in calculus as well as mathematics for data scientists and programming fundamentals.

Applicants should submit an application and fee, official transcripts, a two-page statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, and a current resume. International students must submit an acceptable TOEFL test score. No work experience or GMAT/GRE are required for these programs. Provisional admission may be granted to an applicant with less than a 3.0 GPA if the student earns a 3.0 GPA or higher in the first nine credit-hours of the program.

Study Plan: Students generally take one or two courses per eight-week term amounting to two or three courses per semester. The graduate certificate can be completed in one year and the MSDS in eighteen months to two years. Students can begin courses in January, March, May, July, August, and October.

Curriculum: The MSDS in computational biology and bioinformatics consists of 33 credits. Students without a background in data science or a related field must have completed mathematics for data scientists and programming fundamentals before beginning the program.

There are seven core courses including concepts of statistics 1 and 2, statistical programming, introduction to data mining and analytics, large scale data storage systems, machine learning, and data visualization. Concentration courses include an introduction to computational biology, research in biotechnology, data systems in the life sciences, and data science project for life sciences.

The graduate certificate consists of 18 credits. Courses include introduction to data mining and analytics, statistical programming, data visualization, introduction to computational biology, mathematics for data scientists, and data systems in the life sciences. All credits earned for the graduate certificate are applicable to the MSDS degree.

Online Experience: Lewis University uses Blackboard as its learning management system. Courses are asynchronous, but assignments for online classes are due on specific dates just like an on-campus course. Students are expected to login several times per week to keep current with assignments, participate in classroom discussions, and keep in contact with peers and faculty. Students have access to 24/7 technical support through Lewis University’s Personal Support Center. Each student is also assigned a student services coordinator to call with questions, concerns, and issues.

On-Site Requirements: There are no onsite requirements for either program as they are 100 percent online. Students are welcome to visit campus anytime and participate in graduation on campus.

Paying for the MSDS and Graduate Certificate in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Programs

The cost per credit for these programs is $795. As tuition can increase, interested parties should contact the admissions department of Lewis University for a current cost estimate.

Lewis University seeks to make graduate education affordable by keeping tuition rates low and helping students secure scholarships and funding for their degree. In order to determine need and apply for government loans, students must fill out the FAFSA. The university then helps them find scholarships, submit paperwork, and answer questions. Students can find out more by contacting the Lewis University Office of Financial Aid Services. Data science graduate students can also seek outside sources for help funding their degree, as well as checking with their employer about tuition reimbursement programs.
