Utica University Online Nursing Leadership & Nursing Educator Programs

Utica University offers an online master of science in nursing (MSN) with concentrations in nursing leadership or nursing education. These degrees offer fully online coursework with clinical practicums. The nursing leadership MSN can be completed in just six semesters and requires the completion of 180 clinical hours. The nursing education MSN can be completed in seven semesters and requires the completion of 90 clinical hours. No campus visits are required.

In addition to the MSN degrees, Utica offers post-master’s certificates in nursing leadership and nursing education. The nursing leadership certificate can be completed in just one year at one course per 8-week session with 180 clinical hours. The nursing education certificate can be completed in just 16 months at one course per eight-week session with 90 clinical hours. The post-master’s certificate programs are fully online and do not require campus visits.

The programs begin twice each semester in the fall, spring, and summer. Courses last eight weeks each and part-time students typically take one course every eight weeks, although full-time options are available.

The online MSN and post-master’s certificate programs seek to prepare nurses for leadership positions who are able to utilize ethical principles, nursing science for decision-making, innovation, interprofessional collaboration, and pursue lifelong learning. Nurses will be prepared to incorporate healthcare technologies and improve the quality of care, costs, and patient outcomes through leadership roles.

Nurse leaders take on leadership positions in healthcare such as nurse director, clinical nurse specialist, clinic manager, chief nursing officer, and nurse administrator. Skills required for these positions include excellent communication and management skills, critical thinking, strategic planning, and team management.

Duties may also include the management of patient care services, financial management, and human resource management. Graduates of the nursing leadership MSN and post-master’s certificate programs may be eligible to take the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Nurse Executive Advanced Certification exam.

Nurse educators may earn healthcare positions in the educational or clinical setting. Such positions may include nursing instructor, clinical nurse manager, director of nursing, continuing education director, and nurse curriculum coordinator. Graduates of the nursing education MSN and post-master’s certificate programs may be prepared to take the National League for Nursing (NLN) Certified Nurse Educator exam.

The Utica University online MSN and post-master’s certificate programs are accredited through the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Utica University is regionally accredited through the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) and is located in Utica, New York.

What to Expect from the Utica University Online Nursing Leadership and Nursing Education Programs

Admission Requirements: Prospective online MSN students must hold a bachelor of science in nursing (BSN) degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. Prerequisites include a three-credit undergraduate statistics course and a health assessment course.

Applicants to the post-master’s certificate programs must hold a master of science in nursing (MSN) degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Proof of RN licensure is required for all programs in the state where clinical hours will be completed.

Application materials include an online application and application fee, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, a resume, a writing sample, and documentation by the HR department of the place of employment of at least 2,000 hours of work experience. Proof of English language proficiency may be required as applicable.

Study Plan: The Utica University online MSN – nursing leadership program can be completed in six semesters with a required 180 clinical hours. The MSN – nursing education program can be completed in seven semesters and requires the completion of 90 clinical hours. The nursing leadership certificate can be completed in one year while the nursing education certificate takes 16 months. The same number of clinical hours applies as with the MSN programs.

Note that these timelines are for part-time students taking one course every eight weeks. They are designed for working professionals to be able to balance all parts of their lives. Those who wish to study full-time may do so by taking two courses every eight weeks. Start dates land up to six times per year the fall, spring, and summer. No campus visits are required for any of these programs.

MSN Curriculum: The Utica University online MSN – nursing leadership program comprises 32 credits, while the nursing education program comprises 42 credits.

Core courses for both concentrations include organizational leadership and role development of the advanced practice nurse; quality improvement and safety and health care; health policy and advocacy; epidemiology and population health; nursing research and evidence-based practice; and statistical analysis and scholarly inquiry.

Nursing Leadership Concentration Courses: Healthcare finance and budgeting; organizational theory and human relations management; innovative leadership in healthcare; nursing leadership theory and practice I-II; and mediation, conflict resolution, and negotiation.

Nursing Education Concentration Courses: Advanced pathophysiology; advanced pharmacology I; advanced health assessment and diagnostic reasoning; curriculum development and implementation; advanced instructional design and teaching with technology; assessment and evaluation in nursing education; test construction and analysis; and teaching-learning practicum.

Post-Master’s Certificate Curriculum: The nursing leadership certificate comprises 18 credits and includes 180 clinical hours. The nursing education certificate comprises 25 credits and includes 90 clinical hours. Courses for the post-master’s certificate programs follow the concentration courses for the nursing leadership and nursing education MSN degree programs.

Online Experience: Utica University uses the Engage online learning management system for the online MSN and certificate programs. Through Engage students can use video and email platforms, participate in online chat rooms, join discussion boards, complete assessments, work on collaborative assignments, and participate in live online classes.

Most courses are offered in an asynchronous format, but some activities may be synchronous. Student services may include library services such as online chat with a librarian, faculty office hours, academic advising, financial advising, round-the-clock technical assistance, and career services.

On-Site Requirements: The Utica University online MSN and post-master’s certificate programs do not require any campus visits. All coursework is offered online and clinicals are completed locally in approved settings.
