UMMC Online Master of Health Systems Administration
The University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) offers an online master of health systems administration (MHSA) program through the School of Health Related Professions. The program can be completed in two years, taking six credits per semester. The MHSA begins in the summer and the application deadline lands yearly on March 1st.
The program is designed for working professionals who seek to advance into management and leadership positions in healthcare organizations. Students are typically non-traditional and attend part-time to balance work, family, and school obligations.
Two capstone courses allow for the synthesis of learned information with practical application. The program development and implementation capstone course focuses on program planning and development, including current market conditions, a needs assessment, program planning, project implementation, and the appropriation of resources. The course ends with an evaluation of the project.
The integrated healthcare leadership capstone course purports the development, implementation, and evaluation of a project designed to improve an aspect of healthcare administration and delivery.
Learning outcomes focus on methods of communication, data-informed decision-making, effective leadership principles, awareness of current issues and emerging trends, and knowledge and application of healthcare policy.
MHSA graduates may serve in a variety of healthcare settings, including hospitals, government agencies, group practices, emergency rooms, long-term care facilities, home-health organizations, health research institutions, rehabilitation centers, and health insurance companies. Job titles may include healthcare administrator, hospital administrator, health services manager, nursing home administrator, medical and health services manager, and nursing department manager.

What to Expect from the UMMC Online Master of Health Systems Administration
Admission Requirements: Prospective students must have a bachelor’s degree in any field from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale. No specific work experience, GMAT, or GRE is required. Application materials include an online application, application fee, official transcripts, an essay, a resume, and a letter of recommendation from a prior instructor or current supervisor.
Study Plan: Students are admitted to the online master’s in health systems administration each summer, during which the program begins. Courses last eight or 16 weeks each (depending on the semester), and students can complete the program in two years by completing two, three-credit courses per semester.
Curriculum: The UMMC online MHSA comprises 36 credits. Courses currently include legal ethical concepts; health policy and society; strategic management; organizational behavior; healthcare administration; research for health professionals; data analysis and outcomes assessment; resource management; the program development and implementation capstone course; quality and risk management in healthcare; contemporary issues in healthcare finance; and the integrated healthcare leadership capstone course.
Online Experience: UMMC utilizes Canvas as its online learning management system (LMS). Courses are delivered asynchronously and may include videos, readings, lectures, research projects, discussion boards, simulations, case studies, assignments, and assessments.
Student services may include academic advisors and student mentors, mental health counseling, tutoring, writing help, technical support, career counseling, an online library, and disability services.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-campus requirements.
