The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Allied Health Sciences offers a fully online master of medical lab science leadership (MMLSL) with no campus visits and asynchronous online learning. Students choose an area of concentration from health administration, advanced practice, or higher education. The program is offered both part-time and full-time, and most students take three to six credits per term. UC is based in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The online MMLSL provides students with the knowledge and understanding of unique laboratory processes and specialized testing. Knowledge and understanding of regulations and current challenges are also important parts of the program. Topics studied may include ethics in the healthcare environment, professional roles, interprofessional collaboration, team building, reflective practice, leadership, communication styles, laboratory finance, patient confidentiality, testing algorithms, and patient safety.

Students seeking the medical laboratory science leadership degree take six core courses, three concentration courses, and a capstone course. Candidates must hold certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), the American Association of Blood Banks (AABB), or related certification. If the candidate does not possess one of these certifications, a minimum of two years of work experience is required as a laboratory science professional or in a related field.

Those interested in the degree may have a background in chemistry, biomedical research, cytogenetics, microbiology, molecular biology, pathology, life science education, phlebotomy, histology, or other related fields.

Depending on the specialization chosen, graduates may go on to careers in laboratory management, education, and practice. Job categories may include technical supervisor, administrator, manager, advanced practice specialist, educator, or lead technical specialist.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MMLSL program must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Candidates must hold ACSP, AMT, AABB, or other related certifications. If the candidate does not possess one of these certifications, a minimum of two years of work experience is required as a laboratory science professional or in a related field.

Admissions materials include an online application and fee, official transcripts, a personal statement, two letters of recommendation, and a resume or CV. No GRE or GMAT scores are required. International applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency and obtain transcripts evaluated by an approved agency.

Study Plan: The online MMLSL is offered both part-time and full-time with start dates in the fall, spring, and summer. Students typically take three to six credits per 14-week term. Courses last seven to 14 weeks each. The program can be completed in about 18 months on a full-time basis or two to 2.5 years on a part-time basis. Expected study time is three to five hours per credit; therefore working students should evaluate their course load in light of work and family obligations.

Curriculum: The University of Cincinnati MMLSL program consists of 30 credits and includes six core courses, three concentration courses, and a capstone.

Classes may include the fundamentals of interprofessional medical laboratory leadership and collaboration, medical laboratory leadership, issues and ethics in medical laboratory science, tools for online learning creation and assessment, designing online assessments for data-driven decisions, overview of the American community college, leadership theory for healthcare, investigative and evidence-based medical laboratory leadership, advanced medical laboratory leadership and practice in healthcare and education, universal design for learning in blended and online contexts, applications and issues of teaching with technology, educational equity and diversity in higher education, human and adult learning in medical education, application of instructional design and technology in medical education, cell therapy principles and practices, advanced concepts and applications for clinical immunology, foundations of transfusion medicine, applications and analysis in molecular diagnostics, and human adult learning in medical education.

Online Experience: The University of Cincinnati utilizes Canopy as its distance-based learning ecosystem. This system offers a variety of tools for faculty to deliver online material in meaningful and engaging ways. UC also utilizes Blackboard as its online learning management system.

Course materials may include PowerPoint presentations and videos, chat sessions, discussion boards, assignments, and proctored assessments. Classes are asynchronous, and students should expect to spend about three to five hours of work per week per credit taken. A variety of online services are available including faculty help, technical support student success coordinators, and career counseling.

On-Site Requirements: The online medical lab science leadership program is 100 percent online, therefore no on-site visits are required. Students are welcome to visit campus and are encouraged to attend the graduation ceremony on campus.

The University of Cincinnati online MMLSL tuition is listed in the tables below. Tuition is slightly lower for Ohio residents, and tuition numbers do not include additional fees.
