Core MBA courses provide a solid business management foundation. Healthcare specialization courses focus specifically on healthcare law, financial management in healthcare, how health services and systems work, managing healthcare information and records through health informatics, and global health management.

Anyone may apply who has three years of supervisory or professional work experience and a bachelor’s degree. Those without a business background may need to take foundational modules alongside the MBA degree. What to Expect from the University of Scranton Online MBA in Healthcare Management

Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. At least three years of supervisory or professional work experience are required, but no GMAT/GRE scores are necessary. Applicants must submit an application, three letters of reference, a resume, a statement of intent, and official transcripts. In addition, international students need to submit proof of English language proficiency and a course-by-course transcript evaluation.

Study Plan: Students typically take one course every eight-week session for a total of six sessions per year. At this pace, the program is completed in two years. Students have up to six years to complete the program, and six start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer.

The online MBA in healthcare management program starts with a required cornerstone course and finishes with a capstone course. Between these two courses, students choose from the flex curriculum which allows for a unique combination of courses according to a student’s desired path, including three to six courses in the healthcare management specialization. Note that students without a business background may need to add 12 credits of foundational modules to their degree.

Curriculum: The University of Scranton online MBA in healthcare management consists of 36 credits in a flex curriculum. The required cornerstone course is responsibility, sustainability, and justice. The final capstone course is business policy. Students then choose four to seven core courses which include at least one from management information systems or operations management; at least two from finance management, accounting for management, or managerial economics; and at least one from marketing management or organizational behavior.

Students then choose three to six of the following healthcare management (HCM) specialization courses, depending on how many core flex courses were taken. These include healthcare law, healthcare financial management II, health services and systems, hospital administration, global health management, and introduction to health informatics.

Note that students may need to take up to 12 credits of prerequisite modules for the online MBA if they do not have a business background. This could increase the total credits from 36 to 48. These modules can be completed alongside the MBA degree so that no additional time need be added to the degree.

Online Experience: The online MBA in healthcare management is asynchronous allowing students to view lectures and complete assignments anywhere they have a high-speed internet connection. The University of Scranton uses the Engage learning management system, which includes email, virtual chat, instant messaging, message boards, and other multimedia tools for faculty/student interaction. Each course includes weekly assignments with deadlines. Students have access to support systems including 24/7 technical help, a mentor, aid from professors, a program manager, and a student services coordinator. Students must have a computer with a current internet browser, required plugins, and the Microsoft Office Suite.

On-Site Requirements: The Scranton online MBA in healthcare management is fully online. Students are welcome to visit campus and to participate in graduation on campus.
