University of New Haven Online Master of Healthcare Administration

The School of Health Sciences at the University of New Haven (UNH) offers a fully online master of healthcare administration (MHA) that can be completed in 18 months. There are no campus visits required. A capstone experience with a healthcare administration internship is required, including 150 hours of internship.

The UNH MHA curriculum is designed to cover the Peregrine learning outcomes assessment core competencies for healthcare administration. As such, students take the assessment at the start and end of the program to document progress and make sure graduates are career-ready.

There are 11 core competencies included in the assessment covering a range of topics from communication and relationship management to professionalism, business knowledge, leadership, and healthcare systems knowledge.

MHA courses may be taken in any order for maximum flexibility. Students take 11 core courses plus one elective. Up to six credits may be transferred, and no entrance exams or work experience are required. Designed for busy working adults, the program is flexible with full-time and part-time options. Start dates land three times per year and students have up to five years to complete the program.

Graduates of the UNH MHA may go on to leadership positions in healthcare settings such as hospitals, long-term care facilities, healthcare systems, and government organizations.

The University of New Haven is accredited by the New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE). The MHA at UNH is accredited through the Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Management Education (CAHME). The main campus is located in West Haven, Connecticut.

What to Expect from the University of New Haven Online MHA Program

Admission Requirements: Prospective online MHA students must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher. No GMAT/GRE scores are required. While no work experience is required, students must submit a resume or CV with their application.

Application materials include an online application, official transcripts, a statement of purpose, two letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, and an application fee.

Study Plan: The University of New Haven’s online MHA program can be completed in as little as 18 to 24 months. Students have up to five years to complete the program. Start dates land in January, May, and August. A 150-hour internship experience and capstone project are included in the program. The accelerated courses last seven weeks each.

MHA Curriculum: The University of New Haven MHA comprises 36 credits over 12 courses. Core courses include an introduction to the US healthcare system; management information systems in healthcare; management of healthcare organizations; financial management of healthcare organizations; healthcare ethics; law and public health; statistics for healthcare managers; healthcare leadership; communication in healthcare; strategy and innovation in a healthcare organization; and healthcare administration internship.

Students choose one elective course from an array of electives including healthcare reimbursement; physician practice management; project management in healthcare; organization and management of long-term care facilities; healthcare economics and finance; health policy and politics; alternative healthcare delivery system; public health ethics; human resource planning in healthcare; population health management; contemporary issues in healthcare; Lean Six Sigma in healthcare; and health analytics.

Online Experience: The online MHA is delivered asynchronously through the Blackboard learning management system (LMS). Courses include a variety of learning modalities including audio/visual, assignments and projects, and readings and assessments.

UNH offers a student-first approach, giving students personalized support through enrollment counselors, a transcript team, academic advisors, and faculty. In addition, UNH has technical support, career counseling, and other student services.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements as the University of New Haven’s online MHA and graduate certificate are 100 percent online. A 150-hour internship experience is required, to be completed locally.
