Regis College Online MHA Program - Master of Health Administration

The Regis College School of Health Sciences offers an online master of health administration (MHA) degree. Courses are taught by health administration professionals who are active in their careers and have a solid grasp of the leadership and management requirements of their field. The program offers an in-depth study of the politics and policy behind health care costs and delivery.

Regis College is located in Weston, Massachusetts, just twelve miles from the heart of Boston. It is dedicated to social justice and a global perspective, promoting the objective of securing quality, affordable healthcare for all people. To advance a global perspective, Regis College welcomes international students, and has developed programs such as the Regis College Haiti Project which is an advanced education and leadership program for nursing staff in Haiti. Additionally, students have the opportunity to participate in a Peru service trip over the school’s spring break.

The Regis MHA degree was designed for students from a variety of work and academic backgrounds who want to advance their career in or into the healthcare field. No healthcare experience is required. The curriculum seeks to examine health administration from three prongs: business, policy, and patients. Students learn to develop their strategic management style, critical thinking skills, professional interpersonal communication, organizational skills, emotional intelligence, and financial and accounting skills. Graduates from this MHA program have gone on to careers in hospitals, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, home health organizations, primary care facilities, specialty care facilities, outpatient care, and other healthcare organizations.

What to Expect from the Regis College Online MHA

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MHA through Regis College must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Students must contact an admissions advisor who will email an application and link to submit an application online.

Applicants must submit an application and fee, official undergraduate transcripts, a current resume, a statement of purpose describing professional goals and why the person is applying to the program, and two letters of recommendation. No GRE/GMAT are required for the online program. No healthcare or other specific work experience is required since this program is for students from a wide variety of backgrounds.

International students must have the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor’s degree or must provide proof of English language proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, CAE, or PTE test scores. All foreign transcripts must be officially evaluated and translated.

Study Plan: Students may begin courses in spring, summer, or fall, and can graduate in 24 months part-time. Students can also attend on-campus either full-time or part-time. Unless waived due to qualifications, students participate in a field experience course spending 100 hours in an approved healthcare setting. Through this course, students experience firsthand the role of a health administrator or leader. Students must also complete a project related to health administration. Students are placed with managers of healthcare departments such as managed care organizations, long-term care facilities, nursing homes, home health organizations, insurance companies, hospitals, and clinics.

Curriculum: The master of health administration consists of 33-36 credits. Those with at least two years of work experience in an approved healthcare setting (including at least one year in a managerial position) may have the field experience course waived, reducing the MHA degree to 33 credits. For all others, the degree is 36 credits. Courses include research methods for the health professions; concepts in health administration; management accounting in healthcare; health information systems; health ethics and law; health policy, politics, and perspectives; public relations/marketing communications; economics of healthcare; healthcare quality management; financial analysis in health administration; strategic management of healthcare organizations; and field experience (unless waived due to qualifications).

Online Experience: Regis College uses Blackboard as its web management system. Through Blackboard, students gain access to announcements, course syllabi, reading assignments, online discussions, and lectures. From here, students may submit assignments as well. Note that not all Regis online courses use Blackboard. For administrative records, to view grades and class schedules, register for classes, and see financial aid information students use RegisAccess. Students are also assigned a university email address for correspondence and have access to 24/7 technical support. In addition, students have access to a program called SmartThinking, which is a free, live, 24-hour tutoring service. Tutoring takes place through online discussion boards.

On-Site Requirements: The MHA is 100 percent online. For students who don’t qualify for a field experience waiver, 100 hours of field experience are required in a healthcare facility near the student. Students are welcome to participate on campus for graduation.
