Purdue Global offers an online master of health informatics (MHI) program through the School of Health Sciences. The program is 100 percent online with no campus visits or internships required and takes 18 months or more to complete on a full-time basis. Part-time study is also available.
Purdue Global is an Approved Education Partner (AEP) and Academic Organizational Affiliate of the Healthcare Information Management Systems Society (HIMSS). Through this partnership and affiliation, MHI graduates are prepared to sit for the Certified Associate in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CAHIMS) exam or the Certified Professional in Healthcare Information and Management Systems (CPHIMS) exam. Additionally, Purdue Global is able to provide global health and wellness resources to faculty and students.

As healthcare informatics specialists, graduates use technology and information to improve patient quality of care and lower costs. MHI graduates work behind the scenes in healthcare and public health to affect workflow, connectivity, data accuracy, and communication.
Graduates of Purdue Global based in West Lafayette, Indiana, may go on to careers in medical clinics, research facilities, hospitals, government facilities, data analytics firms, and policy organizations. Purdue Global is regionally accredited through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC).
What to Expect from the Purdue Global Online Master of Health Informatics
Admission Requirements: Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher. No healthcare or other work experience is required. Additionally, GRE and GMAT exam results are not required.
Application materials include an online application, an application fee, and unofficial transcripts with official transcripts required by the end of the first term and before any aid is distributed. A background check may be required. International students may need to submit English language proficiency test scores.
Study Plan: Start dates land once or twice a month and courses run ten weeks each. The MHI program may be completed in as little as 1.5 years on a full-time basis. Part-time study is also available. Students should expect to spend 15 to 18 hours on each course per week. The program is 100 percent online and no internship or practicum is required. Students complete a final project through the capstone course.
Curriculum: The online health informatics program comprises 48 credits over 12 courses, including leadership in healthcare; health information systems; health informatics; project management of health information systems; clinical terminologies and medical vocabularies; healthcare data analytics; information systems and technology management; legal and ethical issues in health information; database design and data modeling; SQL query design; and masters capstone in health informatics. A health informatics elective is also required.
Online Experience: Health informatics courses are asynchronous; however, some synchronous seminars or activities may be included. Purdue Global utilizes Blackboard Learn as its online Learning Management System (LMS). Here students have access to course syllabi, grades, course documents and readings, assignments, and assessments. Also included are online learning tools such as discussion boards and chat rooms.
Students should have strong computer skills. Student services include faculty office hours plus access to the Technology Center, the online Writing Center, the Science Center, the library, and the Math Center. Each MHI student is assigned an advisor and students can utilize the Career Services Center for resume writing and reviews, career planning, interview practice, alumni resources, and networking.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the Purdue Global online master of health informatics as the program is 100 percent online. Students must complete a real-world capstone project at the end of the program.
Paying for the Purdue Global Online Master of Health Informatics
The online MHI at Purdue Global costs $420 per credit. Prospective students should contact the Purdue Global Online School of Health Sciences for current tuition and fees information.
