Queens University of Charlotte offers a flexible online MBA in healthcare through the McColl School of Business. This program is based on Hugh McColl’s three C’s of leadership: character, commitment to community, and competence. It follows a team-based learning approach in which five to six students form a team during the first immersion experience and follow through the program together. This provides opportunities for deeper relationship building, collaboration, effective communication, diversity, and unique perspectives.

The flexible MBA in healthcare students have access to one-on-one executive coaching throughout their program and can choose a coach based on their interests and career goals. The guidance and support from these executive coaches are invaluable and can help students prepare for career transitions, manage stress, navigate interpersonal relationships, and define personal strengths and weaknesses. This helps them maintain a healthy balance between school, family, and work. In addition, students have a high level of support from faculty and McColl School mentors.

Those with a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution may apply to the flexible online MBA program. No work experience is required, but it is preferred. Graduates of the flexible MBA in healthcare program may go on to careers in upper-level management at hospitals, research organizations, public and private healthcare institutions, government facilities, and long-term care facilities. What to Expect from the Queens University Flexible Online MBA in Healthcare

Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university to apply. No work experience is required; however, three years of relevant work experience is preferred. Admissions materials include an online application, a detailed resume, official transcripts, an essay, two letters of professional or academic recommendation, and official GMAT/GRE test scores. A GMAT/GRE waiver is available to the following applicants:

  • Those with at least seven years full-time relevant work experience
  • Those with three years of work experience and a GPA of 3.0 or above
  • Those who hold a master’s degree, PhD, or another advanced degree
  • Those with a CPA, CFP, or other professional certification

In addition to these requirements, prospective students must complete an admissions interview. Note that those without a business background may be required to take foundational classes before beginning the core MBA courses. International students must submit IELTS, TOEFL, or ELS test scores; a course-by-course evaluation of official transcripts; and proof of sufficient funds for their education costs.

Study Plan: The Queens University flexible online MBA in healthcare can be completed in two years or more. Semesters are divided into two eight-week sessions for the online program. Students may begin the MBA program in January, May, or August. Students must attend two weekend campus immersions at the beginning and middle of the program.

Curriculum: The flexible online MBA comprises 39 credits including 21 credits of core courses, three flexible core courses, and nine credits of concentration courses. Core courses include leadership development I-II, strategic planning and implementation, business analytics, economics for managers, managerial accounting, managerial finance, and marketing management. Students then take three of the following flexible courses: operations management, managing in a global context, organizational behavior, and management of information systems.

Finally, students complete a class in health services organization and delivery, in addition to two more courses from the following: management and human resources for healthcare, managerial epidemiology research and statistics, and quality improvement for healthcare organizations. Students who do not have a business background may need to take up to six foundation credits through three courses, including foundations of accounting, foundations of statistics, and foundations of finance. These may be waived upon admittance.

Online Experience: Queens University uses the MyCourses online learning management system (LMS). MyCourses offers Skype web conferencing for face-to-face collaboration, instant messaging (IM), social media tools, shared blogging, community tools, and access to assignments and tools on mobile devices.

Online MBA courses are asynchronous. Through a virtual course wall, students can view assignments, syllabi, and readings; post on discussion groups; complete group assignments; and interact with fellow team members, classmates, and faculty. Technical requirements include a computer with a high-speed internet connection, the Microsoft Office Suite, a current operating system and browser, a webcam, and a microphone. Online students have access to 24/7 technical support, an academic advisor, an alumni mentor for career counseling, an executive coach for one-on-one coaching, and faculty support.

On-Site Requirements: Students participate in two on-campus residencies: one at the beginning of the program and one in the middle. These last from Friday evening until Sunday afternoon.

During the first residency, students will define their main leadership style and create their team-based learning approach that contributes to student success in the online program. Students also learn from guest speakers, meet executive coaches, and explore their strengths and weaknesses through various activities. The second residency builds on the first residency and allows for more one-on-one interaction between faculty, peer teams, coaches, and alumni. The residencies help students distinguish between managers and leaders and teach how to succeed in both roles.
