Regis University offers an online MS in health services administration (HSA), plus two graduate certificates: health care business management and health care quality and patient safety (QPS). The programs are fully online, with no campus visits required, and are offered through the Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions.

The MS in health services administration program can be completed in 24 months of full-time graduate study, with start dates in August, January, and May. Students who have completed an online health care graduate certificate may finish sooner. The graduate certificates take six to 12 months to complete, and HSA students can also complete a graduate certificate in health care informatics.

Online courses last 8 weeks, and the degree comprises 36 credits. Regis University seeks to prepare graduates to become strong health care industry leaders, ready to develop budgets, create and maintain compliance with health care policies, improve patient safety and quality of care, and manage staff.

Key topics covered in the HSA program include organizational ethics and compliance, organizational development in health care settings, health care strategic planning, economics, accounting, financial management, quality care, patient safety, and health care informatics and information management. Graduates may go on to positions such as Patient Safety Supervisor, Health Services Manager, or Medical Administrator.

Admission Requirements: Typical candidates for the MS in health services administration must hold a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field with two to three years of management experience in a health care setting. The required minimum cumulative GPA is 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Applicants without degrees or experience in a health-related field may be required to take prerequisite coursework.

Application materials include an online application and application fee, a current resume or CV, and official transcripts. An in-person or phone interview may be required. No GMAT or GRE is required.

Applicants to the graduate certificates typically hold a bachelor’s degree in health care administration or a business, clinical, or health-related field. The ideal candidate typically has two to three years of management experience in a health care setting, plus some experience with health care systems.

Application materials include an online application, application fee, and official transcripts. Again, applicants without degrees or experience in a health-related field may be required to take prerequisite coursework.

Study Plan: The HSA, health care business management graduate certificate, and health care QPS graduate certificate begin in January, May, and August. Courses last eight weeks each. The HSA can be completed in 24 months of full-time study. The graduate certificates can be completed in six to 12 months and can be applied to the MS in health care administration degree to shorten the time to completion. Students in the HSA program complete a master’s project in health services administration with or at a health care organization and prepares a written and oral final project.

MS in Health Services Administration Curriculum: The HSA comprises 36 credits, with 30 credits of core courses and six credits of electives from HSA, MSHI, or MBA courses. Required courses include organizational ethics and health care compliance; leadership and organizational development in health care settings; strategic planning and development in health services; foundations of health care economics, accounting, and financial management; methods of inquiry and research; advanced concepts of health care finance; contemporary issues in health services delivery systems; and master’s project in health services administration.

Health Care Business Management Graduate Certificate Requirements: Students choose 12 semester hours (four courses) from the following: organizational ethics and healthcare compliance; leadership and organizational development in healthcare; strategic planning and development in health services; marketing and public relations in healthcare settings; assessment of quality care and patient safety; medical practice management; human resource management in healthcare settings; advanced concepts of healthcare finance; and healthcare informatics and information management in healthcare settings.

Health Care Quality and Patient Safety Graduate Certificate Requirements: Assessment of quality care and patient safety; advanced concepts of quality: lean methodology; emerging technologies for health; biostatistics and health data analysis

Online Experience: Regis University delivers classes through D2L Brightspace. Students must have a computer with word processing, spreadsheet, presentation software, speakers, high-speed internet connection, and a webcam. Regis University recommends the Microsoft Office Suite, and students use email and other web-based technologies to communicate and submit assignments.

All students use the Regis University Student Portal and D2L Brightspace for online information and management of courses and materials. Each student is also assigned an academic advisor throughout the program.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online health services programs as they are 100 percent online. Students may partner with and work at a health care organization to complete their master’s project. Students are welcome to visit the Denver, Colorado campus and are encouraged to participate in the graduation ceremony.
