The healthcare administration concentration prepares MBA graduates to focus their leadership and management skills on healthcare settings, applying industry insights concerning quality improvement, performance measurement, communications with patients and families, healthcare technology, and organizational management. One course focusing on healthcare in the U.S., helps students identify and analyze health disparities in the U.S. healthcare system, understand telehealth and telemedicine processes, and examine the various types of health insurance and medical financing in the U.S.

Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and a 3.0 or higher GPA. SOU will conditionally allow students with a 2.75 GPA to apply if they have relevant work experience. No leveling courses or GMAT/GRE scores are required.

Core focus areas include strategic operations management, marketing management through case analysis and strategic applications research, information systems and technologies, microeconomics, legal and ethical issues in business, managerial accounting, advanced organizational behavior, and financial management. A capstone experience integrates MBA coursework through business cases and analysis.

Graduates of the online MBA may go on to leadership and management positions in healthcare organizations, including Medical Practice Manager, Health Services Manager, Hospital Administrator, Healthcare Risk Manager, Quality Assurance Manager, or Communications Director.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MBA in healthcare administration must have earned a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0 for full admission. As a secondary option, applicants may apply for provisional admission with a 2.75 to 2.99 GPA, three years of relevant work experience, and three professional references. Provisional admission students must earn a B or higher in first-semester courses to continue in the program.

Admission materials include an application and fee and official transcripts. No GMAT is required. Non-native English speakers must submit proof of English language proficiency, and restrictions apply for international students.

Study Plan: The SOU online MBA in healthcare administration program can be completed in as little as 16 months with accelerated seven-week courses. The program begins five times annually, with one start date each in the fall, winter, and spring, and two in the summer.

Healthcare MBA students take 33 credits of core MBA courses and 12 credits of healthcare administration courses. A capstone and a graduate research project are also included in the core curriculum.

MBA Curriculum: The online MBA comprises 45 credits and includes 33 credits of core courses plus 12 credits of healthcare concentration courses. SOU accepts students from all educational backgrounds and does not require foundation courses.

Core courses include marketing management and strategies; information systems; strategic operations management; graduate research project; managerial accounting for decision-making; economic analysis; advanced organizational behavior; financial management practices; legal and ethical issues in business and management; and a capstone.

Healthcare administration concentration courses include process improvement; advanced health communication; and healthcare in the United States: structures, systems, and policies.

Online Experience: The online MBA in healthcare administration program is delivered asynchronously through the Blackboard online learning management system (LMS), which is available through the MySOU portal. Through Blackboard, students can access course syllabi and grades, watch recorded lectures, complete assignments and assessments, access case studies, participate in discussion boards, join chatrooms, and use other online services.

Online MBA students’ services may include access to academic advising, financial aid services, online tutoring, technical support, faculty office hours, library and bookstore services, and career counseling.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements as the SOU online MBA in healthcare administration is 100 percent online.
