Case Western Reserve University (CWRU) offers an online master of business administration (MBA) in healthcare management that can be completed in eight semesters, including summers. The online MBA program helps early to mid-career professionals with three to five years of work experience develop evidence-based business and healthcare management skills through synchronous and asynchronous multidisciplinary coursework and in-person residencies.

CWRU includes two 3.5-day residencies that take place in Cleveland, Ohio hospitals such as the Cleveland Clinic, MetroHealth Medical Center and University Hospitals, and the Louis Stokes Cleveland Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The first residency focuses on healthcare culture, and the second on project-based learning. They include team-based activities, panel discussions with healthcare administrators, idea exchanges, relationship-building, and experiencing the daily responsibilities of healthcare management.

Synchronous online courses include 60 to 90 minutes of weekly face-to-face class time. Asynchronous coursework related to the live classes can be completed at the student’s convenience throughout the rest of the week. The online learning experience also includes participation in live online study groups, discussion boards, and other multimedia interactions.

What to Expect from the CWRU Online MBA in Healthcare Management

Admission Requirements: CWRU seeks early to mid-career professionals with three to five years of work experience. GMAT/GRE test scores are required, although waivers are available for those with:

  • Five or more years of related professional work experience, including a high quantitative ability
  • An undergraduate or graduate quantitative-heavy degree within the previous five years and a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • CMA, CPA, or CFA certification or other quantitative-related certification

Although a waiver can be granted, CWRU recommends that all students take the GMAT or GRE as it may be necessary to gain employment after graduation.

Application materials include an online application and fee, one essay, a current resume, unofficial transcripts, and two recommenders’ names and contact information. Applicants may receive a request to interview with the Weatherhead School of Management Admissions Committee. Those who don’t have the required work experience should include internships, part-time work, or co-op employment on their resume. Applicants must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution.

Study Plan: Start dates land in the fall, spring, and summer, and the program runs year-round. Including summers, the program can be completed in eight semesters or a little over 2.5 years. The MBA program includes live, weekly class sessions, asynchronous coursework, and two summer residencies.

Curriculum: The online MBA program comprises 48 credits, including two residencies. The MBA core courses include probability, statistics, and quantitative methods; leadership assessment and development (LEAD); accounting for managers; statistics and decision modeling; managing people and organizations; financial management; economics for managers; managerial marketing; operations management; and strategic issues and applications.

The healthcare core includes experiential learning in healthcare (residency); healthcare decision-making; AI in healthcare; finance issues and applications in healthcare; digital innovation in healthcare; economic issues and applications in healthcare; culture in healthcare organizations (residency); lean operations in healthcare systems; innovation and entrepreneurship in healthcare; regulatory issues in healthcare management; and introduction to population health.

Online Experience: Case Western Reserve University delivers courses through Canvas and Zoom. Live, face-to-face class sessions meet approximately 60 to 90 minutes per week. These sessions include collaboration with faculty and peers question and answer sessions, and feedback and idea exchanges. Students also participate in live study sessions, discussion boards, and group work. Students complete asynchronous learning modules each week to prepare for live class sessions.

Students also complete the two summer residencies at Cleveland area hospitals and clinics, gaining valuable experience in various settings, cultures, and management operations. Student support services include technical support for Canvas and Zoom, a dedicated Student Success Coach, career services, and alumni support.

On-Site Requirements: There are two 3.5-day summer residencies that take place in Cleveland, OH. All other coursework is online.
