Johns Hopkins University Online MS in Healthcare Management (Part-Time)
The Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Carey Business School offers a part-time, online master of science (MS) in healthcare management. This program prepares students to manage business and other operations in a healthcare environment, including strategies, policies, ethics, and cultural dimensions. Students also learn how to manage data to analyze and measure productivity, innovation, and effectiveness in healthcare systems.
JHU is known for innovation, excellence, research and hands-on learning, and the MS in healthcare management is no exception. Students learn through interdisciplinary, interactive methods from faculty through various JHU schools of business, nursing, medicine, and public health. They graduate with the cross-cutting skills and confidence necessary to address current problems, as well as future concerns and issues.
Those who have graduated from the MS in healthcare management have gone on to careers with pharmaceutical companies, consulting firms, the biotech industry, and healthcare organizations, with positions in finance, accounting, general management, consulting, logistics, and operations.
What to Expect from JHU’s Online MS in Healthcare Management
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MS in healthcare management must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited U.S. institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Applicants must submit an online application, application fee, official transcripts from all schools attended, a resume, two essays, one letter of recommendation, and GRE/GMAT test scores. Although the GRE/GMAT is required for admission, a waiver is available for qualified applicants to the part-time program. In addition, two or more years of professional work experience is required for the part-time program.
International students must provide proof of English language proficiency: TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test scores. In addition, all foreign transcripts must have a course-by-course evaluation by an approved agency.
Study Plan: Students may begin courses in the fall, spring, or summer. The part-time MS in healthcare management is designed to be completed in two years, but students have up to five years to complete the program. There is a full-time, on campus program offered through JHU that can be completed in one year for those without professional work experience who wish to study on campus.
Curriculum: The MS in healthcare management consists of 36 credits including 18 business foundation credits, six functional core credits, and 12 elective credits. Please note that not all electives are offered online.
Business foundation courses: Business communication; accounting and financial reporting; economics for decision making; decision models; business leadership and human values; information systems; marketing management; statistical analysis; and operations management.
Functional core classes: Healthcare financing and financial management; frameworks for analyzing healthcare markets; and healthcare law and regulation.
Online electives: Emerging frontiers in health technologies and strategies; medical devices and diagnostics; healthcare operations; fundamentals of healthcare systems; biotechnology and pharmaceuticals; and data analytics.
Students should seek academic counsel to ensure the proper sequencing of courses.
Online Experience: JHU online courses use a combination of Blackboard and Adobe Connect for online classes. As noted above, not all electives are offered online. Courses for the MS in healthcare management are mostly asynchronous but do include some synchronous class-times and activities. There are specific computer requirements for this program. Students must be able to install several programs onto their computers and have access to broadband internet of at least five MBPS. In addition, students must have full administrator access to the computer (some work computers do not allow this), up-to-date virus protection, a webcam, and a microphone. Please note that due to the types of programs used, some Mac users may need to use a loaner computer during some courses.
On-Site Requirements: There is a three-day, in-person residency required on the Baltimore campus during the business communication course. During this time, students participate in learning activities, instruction, and networking with business leaders, JHU alumni, fellow classmates, and JHU faculty. Students are also welcome to visit campus anytime and participate in graduation.

The Carey Business School offers financial aid in the form of scholarships, grants, payment plans, tuition reimbursement, and federal loans, among other funding sources. Students can apply for federal financial aid through the FAFSA. Note that graduate students must be enrolled in at least 4.5 credits per term to qualify for federal loans. JHU students are also encouraged to seek financial aid from outside resources to help pay for their MS in healthcare management degree. In addition, applicants may seek tuition reimbursement from their place of employment.
