Creighton University Online MS in Health Informatics

Creighton University’s College of Arts and Sciences offers an online master of science in health informatics (MSHI) program that can be completed in as few as two years. Through a comprehensive curriculum, Creighton seeks to create health-data-informed graduates who promote change in organizations, healthcare policy, and populations.

Graduates of the health informatics master’s program may go on to positions such as chief medical information officer, director of clinical services, nursing informatics specialist, director of medical records, information technology (IT) manager, clinical research data analyst, application systems analyst, and many other positions.

What to Expect from the Creighton University Online MS – Health Informatics

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MSHI program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an Accredited Institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher. No GMAT/GRE or work experience is required. Application materials include official transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Proof of English language proficiency is required for applicants whose first language is not English.

Study Plan: The MSHI program begins in August and January and can be completed in two years or more by taking six to nine credits per semester. Part-time completion plans increase the length of the program. Students take 30 credits of core courses and six credits of electives. A capstone course culminates the program, allowing students to synthesize their learning and skills and apply them to a research project or a real-world health informatics problem.

Curriculum: The MSHI comprises 36 credits. Core courses include introduction to health informatics; fundamental concepts in statistics and statistical reasoning; programming for health informatics; data management; data governance; machine learning and health informatics; systems analysis and design; leadership and health informatics; artificial intelligence in health informatics; and capstone. Students also choose six credits of electives from the following courses: ethical issues in population health: a global perspective; health economics and finance; health planning and marketing; change management and quality; law and healthcare ethics.

Online Experience: Creighton University delivers MSHI courses asynchronously through BlueLine. Students can interact virtually with faculty and peers through discussion boards, live video conferencing, and face-to-face virtual study groups. Course components may include problem sets, data collection and analysis, research, group projects, case studies, and assessments.
Students can access online services through the Success Center, including academic coaching, tutoring, mentoring, career-related skill development, seminars and workshops, career counseling, and technical support. Resources are housed through the Center for Advising Resources and Support (CARS), the John P. Fahey Career Center, the Division of Information Technology, and the Office of Student and Family Support.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MS in health informatics.
