Northern Kentucky University (NKU) offers a 100 percent online master of science in health informatics (MHI), one of the first MHI programs launched online. NKU is among the few higher learning institutions with a dedicated College of Informatics. This exciting MHI program was developed in response to the changing healthcare industry: artificial intelligence (AI), mHealth, data visualization, and the Internet of Things (IoT), and at the center of these important developments is informatics.
The NKU MHI program covers the understanding, analysis, integration, and improvement of today’s healthcare processes and information systems, focusing on quality of care. The systems analysis and design course teaches the tools and techniques necessary for information system design and implementation and the interpersonal communication skills needed to interact with healthcare clients, developers, and users. Systems development approaches include Joint Application Development (JAD) and Rapid Application Development (RAD).
Northern Kentucky University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) and is located in Highland Heights, Kentucky.
What to Expect from the Northern Kentucky University Online MS in Health Informatics
Admission Requirements: The streamlined application process requires the submission of a professional resume outlining relevant work experience and official transcripts with the application. A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is required. No GMAT or GRE is required.
Study Plan: The NKU online MHI can be completed in as few as 12 months, with start dates landing twice each in the fall, spring, and summer. Courses last seven weeks each and include an experiential capstone project, working with a local healthcare organization or business, allowing the integration of academic learning with real-world situations. The capstone is completed under the supervision of a faculty advisor.
MS in Health Informatics Curriculum: The online MHI comprises 33 credits through 11 courses. These include systems analysis design, database management systems, introduction to healthcare operations, information technology project management, technical foundations of health informatics, information systems in healthcare organizations, evidence-based healthcare methods, healthcare organizational change management, healthcare quality systems, one approved elective, and the capstone.
Online Experience: Northern Kentucky University delivers courses through the Canvas online learning management system (LMS). Both campus and online courses use Canvas to organize class activities, assignments, and tests, and students go there to submit homework. Students and faculty can communicate through email, phone, chat, and online discussion boards.
Course content may include recorded lectures, readings, research assignments, case studies, other assignments and projects, and assessments. Online students have access to technical support, the W. Frank Steely Library, faculty office hours, financial and academic advising, and career counseling.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the NKU online MS in health informatics as it is 100 percent online. The capstone experiential project is completed with a local healthcare organization or business.
Paying for the Northern Kentucky University Online MHI
Northern Kentucky University Online MS in Health Informatics tuition numbers are listed in the tables below, and all fees are included in those numbers. NKU MS in Health Informatics students may be eligible for unsubsidized federal student loans through the FAFSA. To qualify for loans, graduate students must take at least six credits per trimester or semester. Other funding options include private loans, tuition reimbursement programs through employers, or outside scholarships and grants.
