What to Expect from the Flexible MBA in Health Care Management

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the Flexible MBA in Health Care Management must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a minimum GPA of 3.0. In addition, at least two years of relevant, professional work experience are required. Application requirements include an online application and fee, a resume, one letter of recommendation, two essays, GRE/GMAT test scores, and official transcripts of all post-secondary education. A GRE/GMAT waiver is available for qualified applicants.

International students must provide proof of English language proficiency through TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE test scores as well as securing a course-by-course evaluation of transcripts by an approved agency such as WES.

Study Plan: Typically, students in the Flexible MBA in Health Care Management take two courses per term (four courses per semester). Students following the recommended program plan can complete the degree in 2.7 years, but students have up to six years to complete it. Courses are eight weeks long, with start dates available in fall, spring, or summer. The program is offered online, on-site at the Baltimore campus, or as a blend of both (certain MBA foundational core courses can also be taken on-site at the Washington, D.C. campus).

Curriculum: Johns Hopkins’ Flexible MBA in Health Care Management consists of 54 credits. This includes 30 credits in business foundations, 12 credits of concentration courses, and 12 credits of electives. Foundation courses include business law, business communication, business leadership and human values, accounting and financial reporting, negotiation, economics for decision making, the firm and the macroeconomy, among others.

Concentration courses in health care management include data analytics, health innovations and evaluations, applied and behavioral economics in health care, and client consulting practicum I and II. MBA foundational electives include entrepreneurial ventures, power and politics, wealth management, global strategy, and corporate governance.

Online Experience: Online courses are developed and taught by the same instructors who teach full-time and part-time students on-site. Although the learning environment is different, Carey strives to ensure course content and rigor are equal regardless of modality. The courses offer both hands-on instruction as well as traditional methods of teaching to expose students to a broad range of learning experiences.

All online students have access to the full gamut of student services, including academic advising, library services, 24/7 technical support, career counseling services, tutoring, and information technology services.

Online courses may include some synchronous activities with set dates and times, but they are mostly asynchronous, meaning learning can happen around your weekly schedule. Carey Business School uses a combination of Adobe Connect and Blackboard for online course delivery and management.

The Flexible MBA program has specific computer technology requirements. Students must have a microphone, webcam, and current virus protection. MBA students also need to have broadband internet and install several programs, for which they will need full administrator access to their computer. Carey Business School outlines other computer specifications for online students. Due to the types of programs used, some may not be available for Mac. Mac users may need a loaner computer during specific courses.

Residency Component: Flexible MBA students taking online sections of negotiation, business communication, and leadership in organizations courses are required to attend three on-campus residencies. The negotiation residency lasts 1.5 days. The business communications and leadership in organization residencies last 2.5 days. Activities include instruction, collaborative activities, and networking with fellow classmates, professors, alumni, and business leaders in attendance. If students take the on-site or blended format, no residencies are required. Students are also welcome to visit campus at any time and participate in campus graduation.

Flexible MBA students may apply for federal aid and graduate student loans through the FAFSA. Graduate students must be enrolled at least half-time to qualify for federal loans (4.5 credits per term). Carey Business School also offers merit scholarships of up to $10,000.
