University of Scranton Online Dual MBA-MHA Program

The University of Scranton offers a fully online dual MBA-MHA program. The dual master of business administration and master of health administration program allows students to gain a comprehensive healthcare administration and business administration dual degree in less time than it would take to complete them separately. Graduates are prepared to effectively manage the business side of healthcare organizations while fulfilling administrative responsibilities specific to health service environments. By taking the degrees on a dual path, students save between 13 to 18 credits compared to completing the degrees separately.

The dual MBA-MHA program follows the Jesuit approach to learning weaving ethics and social responsibility into the heart of the curriculum. In addition, the MHA portion of the degree follows the ACHE Healthcare Leadership Alliance model which covers five competency domains: knowledge of the healthcare environment, professionalism, communication and relationship management, leadership, and business acumen. The University of Scranton is located in Scranton, Pennsylvania.

Prospective students must have at least three years of professional or managerial work experience. Graduates of the dual MBA-MHA program may go on to positions such as healthcare consultant, strategic project manager, executive director, and hospital administrator, among others.

What to Expect from the University of Scranton Online Dual MBA-MHA Program

Upon completion of the required courses, students have an internship or administrative residency that comprises three to eight credits, depending on prior work experience. The required course will be determined upon admission to the program.

The three-credit eight-week internship allows students to apply theories and skills learned throughout the program in a real-life setting and features weekly reports and a final paper. The eight-credit administrative residency comprises 1,000 hours of senior management fieldwork experience and includes a major project. It is completed over two semesters. Depending on prior education and experience, students may also be required to complete seven one-credit MBA learning modules for the program.

Curriculum: The University of Scranton online dual MBA-MHA consists of 65 to 70 credits, depending on the required internship or residency course. This includes 56 credits of core courses, one MBA elective, one MHA elective, an international course, and the internship or residency.

Core courses may include healthcare financial management I, healthcare law, healthcare economics and policy, administrative issues, health services and systems, human resources management, healthcare IT management, healthcare ethics, and organizational behavior, among others.

The MBA elective may be taken from any course from the MBA curriculum not yet within the program requirements. MHA elective choices include hospital administration, long term care administration, medical practice administration, global health management, or grants writing and management. The international course choices are varied and may include international finance, global health management, global marketing, supply chain management, and a study abroad opportunity in Asia.

Fieldwork courses are either an internship in health administration or an administrative residency and affect the total credits required. Foundation MBA modules that may be required include management science, information management, microeconomics, macroeconomics, finance, marketing, and operations management.

Online Experience: The University of Scranton uses the Engage learning management system (LMS) for the online dual MBA-MHA degree. Courses are mostly asynchronous and students interact through online discussion threads, virtual chat, instant messaging (IM), and email.

Due to the MHA program’s CAHME accreditation, some synchronous learning activities may be required, including reviews of assigned case-studies, lectures, course overviews, and peer-faculty discussions. The synchronous activities will have a posted time to log in and participate. Online students have access to a student services coordinator, faculty office hours, 24/7 technical support, library services, a program manager, and an assigned mentor.
