University of Scranton Online Master of Health Administration (MHA) or Executive Certificate

The University of Scranton offers a fully online master of health administration (MHA) that is CAHME-accredited. The MHA program seeks to develop skills in communication, leadership, critical thinking, analysis, and ethics. It follows the ACHE Healthcare Leadership Alliance model covering five competency domains: communication and relationship management, leadership, professionalism, knowledge of the healthcare environment, and business acumen. The curriculum is also based on the university’s emphasis on education for justice and ethics.

The University of Scranton, located in Scranton, Pennsylvania, also offers an executive certificate in health administration taught by the same faculty that teach the full MHA program. The program is career-focused and designed to be immediately applied to the healthcare workplace. It offers core business and administration skills and strategies for the health administration field. The certificate is also directly applicable to earning the full MHA degree.

Prospective students must have at least three years of professional or supervisory work experience and may hail from a variety of educational and professional backgrounds. MHA and executive certificate graduates may go on to positions such as benefits manager, chief executive officer, hospital administrator, or health services manager, among others.

What to Expect from the University of Scranton Online MHA and Executive Certificate

Admission Requirements: Prospective students must have at least three years supervisory or professional work experience. No GMAT is required, but applicants must have a bachelor’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA. Materials for application include an application, three letters of reference, a statement of intent, a professional resume, signatures on a disclosure and background check authorization, and official transcripts. International students must submit TOEFL, IELTS, or STEP test scores and a course-by-course transcript evaluation from WES or ECE.

Study Plan: Students can begin the online MHA and executive certificate six times per year. Courses are offered in eight-week sessions. The MHA program can be completed in 30 months but students may take up to six years. The executive certificate can be completed in five eight-week time frames, taking one course per term. Upon completion of the required courses, students in the MHA program complete a supervised 150-hour internship at an approved location convenient to the student. During the internship, students apply learned theories and concepts to a workplace setting, fill out weekly reports, and write a final paper about the field experience. This internship gives students the opportunity to gain specific MHA experience and network with future employers.

Curriculum: The University of Scranton online MHA consists of 47 credits: 12 credits of foundation courses, 32 credits of core courses, and three credits of electives. Foundation courses include healthcare financial management I, healthcare statistics and research methods, healthcare organization and administration, and healthcare services and systems.

Core courses include healthcare law, healthcare economics and policy, human resources management, administrative issues, leadership in health administration, healthcare planning and marketing, healthcare operations and quality, healthcare IT management, healthcare financial management II, healthcare ethics, and an internship in healthcare.

Elective choices include hospital administration, long term care administration, grants writing and management, global health management, and medical practice administration.

The executive certificate in health administration consists of 15 credits. Students take two health administration electives plus the following courses: healthcare organization and administration, healthcare financial management, and health services and systems.

Online Experience: The University of Scranton uses the Engage learning management system for the online MHA and executive certificate. Courses are mostly asynchronous and can be accessed anywhere students have a high-speed internet connection. Due to the program’s CAHME accreditation, some synchronous learning activities—i.e., those asking students to log in at a specific time—may be required, which may include lectures, course overviews, reviews of assigned case-studies, and faculty-student discussions. The synchronous activities will have a posted time in which students and faculty log in to participate.

Courses use several tools throughout the program to engage students including instant messaging, message boards, email, virtual chat, and others. Students have access to office hours with professors, a student services coordinator, 24/7 technical support, a program manager, and an assigned mentor.

On-Site Requirements: The Scranton MHA and executive certificate are 100 percent online. The MHA requires a 150-hour internship at an approved organization near the student. Students are also welcome on campus anytime and encouraged to participate in graduation on campus.
