JHU Online MAS in Patient Safety and Healthcare Quality

The Johns Hopkins University located in Baltimore, Maryland, offers a fully online master of applied science (MAS) in patient safety and healthcare quality. This multidisciplinary program is a collaboration between four JHU schools: the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the JHU School of Nursing, the JHU School of Medicine, and the Armstrong Institute for Patient Safety and Quality.

The degree seeks to educate leaders in preventing patient harm and improving patient experiences and outcomes in the healthcare industry. Students learn to design safer systems, affect cultural and organizational change, create patient-centered healthcare, measure the safety and quality of patient programs, and spot problems before they post a risk to patients. The program also seeks to educate physicians in change theory and leadership in the areas of patient safety and healthcare quality—an area lacking in many education programs for healthcare providers.

Interested professionals must have at least three years of health-related work experience. Graduates of the program may go on into positions such as medical director and patient safety officer, director of quality management, director of quality outcomes, director of patient safety, and risk improvement director, among others.

Online Experience: This integrated program offers online classes through CoursePlus, the course management system at JHU. Students begin with an introduction to online learning, which introduces students to distance-based and onsite course structures throughout the JHU campus, including cohort-based, time-boxed, and highly collaborative course designs. Students learn what their responsibilities are and how to communicate and collaborate with faculty and peers throughout the program. The class also touches on computer and network connection compatibility and the use of online tools to facilitate their education.

To ensure the consistency of on-campus to online courses, all online courses are taught twice on campus before being recorded for online programs. The JHU Bloomberg School also offers a wealth of free online courses through OpenCourseWare, Coursera, and iTunes U. Online students have access to the same support as on-campus students including 24/7 technical support, faculty advising, admissions counseling, career counseling, library services, and more.
