What to Expect from the University of Delaware Online Healthcare MBA Program

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the University of Delaware online healthcare MBA and dual specializations must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 2.8. Most applicants have at least two years of work experience, which may include internships, volunteer work, and major academic projects. However, applicants of various backgrounds may apply.

Application materials include a completed application and fee, a personal statement or essay, a current resume or CV, two letters of recommendation, unofficial transcripts, and GMAT/GRE test scores. An application fee waiver may be available to those who score adequately on the GMAT/GRE tests. Additionally, a GMAT/GRE waiver is available for qualified applicants. International students must submit acceptable TOEFL or IELTS scores and transcripts in both the language in which it was earned and English.

Study Plan: The online healthcare MBA is an accelerated program and can be completed in just 16 months. Students can proceed at a pace that works in their best interests to balance family, work, and school responsibilities. Each course lasts seven weeks and the program begins in fall, spring, or summer. During the program, students participate in two unique workshop courses which delve into emotional intelligence, decision-making skills, and critical thinking, as well as networking, communication, and branding.

Curriculum: The online healthcare MBA consists of 44 credits. Core courses include financial management, economic analysis for business policy, the fundamentals of analytics, marketing management, operations management and management science, financial reporting and analysis, managing people, teams and organizations, corporate strategy, and ethical issues in domestic and global business environments. The two career workshops are also part of the core curriculum.

For the healthcare specialization, students take population health informatics, patient experience and engagement, and e-service management in healthcare. In addition, students take two courses from the other concentration tracks in business analytics, finance, strategic leadership, or international business. Within each concentration, there are electives to choose from.

For a dual specialization MBA in healthcare/business analytics, students take the required three courses for the healthcare concentration plus the following three courses: database design and implementation, decision analytics and visualization, and data mining for business analytics.

For a dual specialization MBA in healthcare/finance, students take the required three courses for the healthcare concentration plus the following three courses: investment analysis and portfolio management, corporate financial management, and financial modeling and valuation.

For a dual specialization MBA in healthcare/international business, students take the required three courses for the healthcare concentration plus the following three courses: globalization and business, financial modeling and valuation, and managing the global enterprise.

For a dual specialization MBA in healthcare/strategic leadership, students take the required three courses for the healthcare concentration plus three of the following five courses: negotiation and conflict resolution, leading across boundaries, selected topics in management and leadership, advanced topics in leadership and teams, and managing the global enterprise.

Students wishing to pursue a triple concentration take the courses for a dual specialization plus two courses from a third concentration, for a total of 53 credits. Those wishing to complete a major plus a concentration would take the 27-credit core, 2 credits of professional seminars, 15 credits in one area for the major, and nine credits for the concentration, for a total of 53 credits. Finally, those students desiring a double major would take the core and professional seminars plus 15 credits in one area for the first major and 15 credits in a second area for the second major, totaling 59 credits.

Online Experience: The online healthcare MBA utilizes two online learning management systems: Canvas and Sakai. Professors will convey which system they use for their class. Canvas and Sakai offer several multimedia tools for discussion, interactive coursework, collaboration, social media, group chat, and group conferences. As part of the curriculum, students are able to participate in case studies, online seminars, classroom discussions, and much more. Online students have support systems including access to advisors, virtual office visits with professors, round-the-clock technical support, online tutoring, and library services. In addition, the University of Delaware offers Lerner’s Career Services which includes a business speaker series, career fairs, virtual workshops, career assessments, networking events, and more. Career services are already included with MBA tuition.

On-Site Requirements: There are no onsite requirements as the University of Delaware online healthcare MBA and additional MBA specializations are 100 percent online. Students are welcome to come to campus and to participate in graduation on campus.
