What to Expect from the University of Cincinnati Online Master of Health Informatics
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the MHI program must hold a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Admissions materials include an online application, unofficial transcripts, a letter of intent, two letters of recommendation, a resume or CV, and an application fee. No work experience or GMAT is required. International applicants must submit proof of English language proficiency and may be required to have transcripts evaluated by an approved agency.
Study Plan: Students in the online MHI through UC take two to three courses per 15-week term. Courses last 7.5 weeks each. The program can be completed in two years. Students can also add nine credits for the health information security certificate. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer.
Curriculum: The University of Cincinnati MHI program consists of 33 credits and includes the following courses: leveraging analytics and business intelligence tools for healthcare; the healthcare and public health landscape; health informatics, information systems and technology; vocabularies, terminology, knowledge discovery and related health information technology standards; health information legislation, privacy and security; workflow process analysis, system development, human factors and usability; project and program management; leadership and strategic management in health settings; database modeling and design; an introduction to statistics; healthcare data analytics and business intelligence; advanced health data, analytics, business intelligence and reporting; and advanced database management and design in healthcare settings.
Online Experience: The University of Cincinnati utilizes Blackboard as its online learning management system and its eLearning ecosystem is titled Canopy. The eLearning system is innovative and offers a wealth of tools for faculty to present online material in effective and meaningful ways. Students have access to PowerPoint presentations and videos, can engage in chat sessions and discussion boards with peers and professors, and complete assignments, tests, and quizzes.
Classes are mostly asynchronous although some activities may be synchronous. Students are encouraged to log in at least once a day to stay on top of coursework, messages, and interactive opportunities.
On-Site Requirements: The online MHI is 100 percent online. No onsite visits are required. Students are welcome to visit campus and encouraged to attend the commencement ceremony.
