The Northeastern University (NEU) D’Amore-McKim School of Business, based in Boston, Massachusetts, offers an online MBA. The MBA can be earned as a general track or one of seven concentrations, including healthcare management. This program gives working professionals the opportunity to earn a rigorous, reputable degree in a 100 percent online format.

In order to combine world-class academics and meaningful business experience, NEU uses real-world case studies in many of the MBA courses. NEU’s curriculum and learning methods are incredibly innovative, collaborative, hands-on, entrepreneurial, and experiential. For example, students may have the opportunity to visit a local business and create a report on the pros and cons of how it is run, using pictures and videos as examples. Other innovative techniques are the use of gamification and simulations for learning business concepts and other material.

By earning an MBA at Northeastern, students can acquire advanced business management and communication skills, learn to solve complex case scenarios, foster critical thinking and collaborative skills, and build strong relationships with fellow students and faculty that go beyond the online classroom. Although the program is 100 percent online, students do have the option of completing a campus-based residency and an international residency.

Through the healthcare management concentration, students prepare for advancement into leadership in the industry. Students gain knowledge and skills specific to the business operations of healthcare organizations, including how to analyze healthcare data and statistics; apply that data to the management of an organization, community, or policy; and operate within a budget.

Professionals with five or more years of work experience can apply, although if they are slightly below, other items may be taken into consideration to bolster the application. Graduates of this program have gone into careers in healthcare organizations, pharmaceutical companies, and biotechnology industries, among others.

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the NEU online MBA in healthcare management must hold a bachelor’s degree with a 3.0 or higher GPA from an accredited institution. Five years work experience are typically required, but GMAT/GRE scores are not. Applicants must submit an application and fee, a current resume, official transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate work, two letters of recommendation, and an application essay.

International students must submit TOEFL, PTE, or IELTS scores, and their transcripts must be evaluated by WES or CED. Applicants with less than five years professional experience may still apply, but supplemental documentation may be required (e.g., GMAT scores, professional certifications, other advanced qualifications).

Study Plan: The online MBA program has 9 start dates throughout the year: January, February, March, April, June, July, August, October and November. Courses are highly interactive and the program is designed to be completed in two years.

Curriculum: The online MBA in healthcare management consists of 50 credits: 13 core courses and five electives. To earn the healthcare management concentration, students must choose three of their five electives from that concentration. Core courses include identifying strategic implications in accounting data; financial statement preparation and analysis; value creation through financial decision making; enterprise growth and innovation; managing people and organizations; managing the global enterprise; global competition and market dominance; information analysis; creating and sustaining customer markets; operations and supply chain management; strategic decision making in a changing environment; managing information resources; and managing ethics in the workplace and marketplace.

Healthcare management concentration electives include healthcare finance; the healthcare industry; strategic decision making for healthcare professionals; and an introduction to health informatics and health information systems.

Online Experience: NEU uses Blackboard as its web-based course management system. Occasionally students utilize software outside of Blackboard to meet class requirements. As mentioned, NEU uses unique learning techniques such as gamification, which combines gaming with learning, as well as simulations covering team communication and negotiation. These online forums simulate real classroom discussions, opening up possibilities for collaborative team assignments where students create case assessments with their small group.

Courses are mostly asynchronous which allows students to work at their own pace while still meeting deadlines. Courses are kept to 20 students or less, and instructors are available to provide support and coaching for a more personalized experience.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MBA in healthcare management as the program is 100 percent online. Students are welcome to campus anytime and encouraged to participate in graduation on campus.

Northeastern University charges $1,640 per credit for the online MBA in healthcare management program for an estimated total tuition of $82,000 plus additional fees.
