The GW Online Bioinformatics Programs - BSHS, MSHS

The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, located in Washington DC, offers a bachelor of science in health sciences (BSHS) and master of science in health sciences (MSHS) degree in biomedical informatics. Students in this program may transfer up to six credits of graduate coursework (if approved). Graduates of the MSHS may go on to careers as a healthcare IT project manager, health informatics consultant or director, or a chief medical information officer.

What to Expect from The George Washington University Online Bioinformatics Programs

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the GW BSHS in biomedical informatics must have an associate’s degree or transfer 60 credits of college-level coursework to the program, with a minimum GPA of 2.5. Additional required materials include an application and application fee, a personal statement, one letter of recommendation, official transcripts, and a resume or curriculum vitae.

Applicants to the GW MSHS in biomedical informatics must hold at least a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. Additional materials include an application and application fee, resume or curriculum vitae, a statement of purpose, official transcripts, and two letters of recommendation. No GMAT/GRE scores or work experience are required.

International students must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores for all degree applications.

Study Plan: The online BSHS and MSHS degrees can be completed in 18 months; however, the average completion time is 24 months. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. Students should plan to devote 18 to 20 hours of time for each three-credit course.

Curriculum: The online BSHS in biomedical informatics consists of 120 credits—60 of which are transferred in by the student and 60 of which are completed through GW. The 20 courses may include current issues in bioethics, research and writing in the health sciences, scripting, programming for informaticians, population health for medical informatics, and clinical decision support. Students also choose three electives from a list that may include the psychosocial aspects of health and illness, pathophysiology, health policy and the healthcare system, and high-performance computing. Finally students choose either a medical informatics research project or a medical informatics internship.

The online MSHS in biomedical informatics consists of 36 credits; six graduate-level credits may be transferred in with approval. Students complete 11 core courses and one elective. Core courses include biostatistics for clinical translational research, topics in healthcare leadership, issues and trends in health systems, healthcare for informatics, medical decision making and decision support systems, and epidemiology for clinical and translational research. Students also complete biomedical informatics practicum and biomedical informatics capstone. Elective choices include grantsmanship in translational research, advanced computing applications for biomedical informatics, and bioinformatics for genomics.

Online Experience: Students in the online GW BSHS and MSHS biomedical informatics programs begin with an online student orientation. All students are assigned an academic advisor and have access to academic and technical support through GW. The George Washington University uses the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) for online learning. This system includes course syllabi, videos, assignments, faculty/peer communication tools, discussion groups, forums, and all tests and quizzes.

On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online BSHS and MSHS degrees from GW. Students may choose an internship for the BSHS and graduate students in the MSHS must complete a practicum. Students are invited to participate in graduation on campus.

George Washington University charges $615 per credit for the online BSHS in biomedical informatics. The MSHS degree costs $980 per credit.
