The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences, located in Washington DC, offers a master of science in health sciences (MSHS) degree in biomedical informatics. Notably, this program is affiliated with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA).
The MSHS in biomedical informatics prepares graduates to integrate data analysis and manipulation with programming skills, offer interventions for improved healthcare delivery from data science findings, and use information analytics to enhance clinical decision-making.

Study Plan: The online MSHS degree can be completed in 18 months; however, the average completion time is 24 months. Start dates are offered in the fall, spring, and summer. Students should plan to devote 18 to 20 hours of time to each three-credit course.
Curriculum: The online MSHS in biomedical informatics comprises 36 credits; six graduate-level credits may be transferred with approval. Students complete 11 core courses and one elective. Core courses include biostatistics for clinical translational research, topics in healthcare leadership, issues and trends in health systems, healthcare for informatics, medical decision-making and decision support systems, and epidemiology for clinical and translational research. Students also complete a biomedical informatics practicum and biomedical informatics capstone. Elective choices include grantsmanship in translational research, advanced computing applications for biomedical informatics, and bioinformatics for genomics.
Online Experience: Students in the online GW MSHS biomedical informatics programs begin with online student orientation. All students are assigned an academic advisor and have access to academic and technical support through GW. The George Washington University uses the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) for online learning. This system includes course syllabi, videos, assignments, faculty/peer communication tools, discussion groups, forums, and all tests and quizzes.
On-Site Requirements: There are no on-site requirements for the online MSHS from GW. Graduate students in the MSHS must complete a practicum. Students are invited to participate in graduation on campus.
