Concordia University Nebraska Online MHA: Gerontology, HIT, Leadership, and Population Health

Concordia University – Nebraska (CUNE) offers a 100 percent online master of health administration (MHA) program with one of four concentrations: gerontology, health information technology (HIT), leadership, and population health. Courses last eight weeks each and the program can be completed in just one year on a full-time basis or two years part-time. A 70-hour practicum experience is included with the program, and no campus visits are required.

The gerontology concentration focuses on issues facing aging adults including their health, social issues, and other challenges. Students in this concentration study long-term care administration, the economics of aging, government policies that affect aging adults, and psychosocial issues specific to this population. Graduates may go on to careers in long-term health care administration, home health care administration, gerontology rehabilitation administrators, and the like.

The health information technology concentration focuses on how to incorporate electronic systems into health care and improve patient care. Courses focus on leadership issues in relation to the proper use of IT, choosing and implementing HIT systems, regulations concerning information systems, organizational strategy, the use of health information systems by healthcare professionals, health informatics, and cyber-security. Graduates may go on to careers focusing on the health information systems side of administration.

The leadership concentration focuses on human resource, financial, and organizational management. Courses cover Medicare and Medicaid issues, traditional managed care issues, value-based purchasing, population health, behavioral science theories, structural behavior, leadership communication, and human resource management. Graduates of this concentration may go on to leadership and management positions in healthcare organizations and nursing administration.

The population health concentration focuses on the evaluation of health risk behavior and costs related to chronic illness. Courses cover the principles of epidemiology, chronic disease prevention, the effects of microbial diseases on community health, behavioral health, behavioral change, psychological factors in health choices and behavioral change, and basic community health problems. Graduates may go on to leadership and management positions in population health.

Concordia University – Nebraska is accredited through the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and offers several online master’s programs. CUNE is located in Seward, Nebraska.

What to Expect from the Concordia University – Nebraska Online MHA

Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MHA program must hold a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8. No GMAT or GRE or work experience is required. Students complete an online application and submit official transcripts, an essay, a letter of intent, and a resume. In addition, students should fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and accept financial aid upon acceptance to the program.

Study Plan: The Concordia University – Nebraska online MHA consists of 12 courses, which last eight weeks each. Full-time students who complete two courses per eight weeks can complete the program in just one year. Part-time students may take one course per eight weeks, completing the program in two years. The online MHA program includes a 70-hour practicum local to the student. CUNE offers concierge registration with a team of enrollments specialists who guide students through their entire program.

Curriculum: The Concordia University – Nebraska MHA consists of 36 credits over 12 courses. Core courses include health services organization; management of healthcare organizations; healthcare financial management I; health information technology; health outcomes and quality improvement; health care policy; health law and ethics; strategic management in healthcare organizations; and practicum and health care administration.

MHA in Gerontology Courses: Specialization courses for the MHA in gerontology include issues in gerontology and aging studies; social gerontology; and long-term care administration.

MHA in Health Information Technology Courses: Specialization courses for the MHA in health information technology include healthcare systems leadership implications; health informatics; and cyber-security.

MHA in Leadership Courses: Specialization courses for the MHA in leadership include healthcare financial management II; leadership and organizational behavior; and human resources management.

MHA in Population Health Courses: Specialization courses for the MHA in population health include Applied epidemiology; principles of health behavior; and Community Health.

Online Experience: CUNE utilizes Blackboard as its online learning management system (LMS). Courses may include live web conferencing, online discussion boards, and group projects.
