What to Expect from the Creighton University Online MS in Health Care Ethics and Graduate Certificate
Admission Requirements: Applicants to the online MS in health care ethics and graduate certificate programs must hold a BS with a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the last 60 credits of their undergraduate programs. A completed application includes the online application and application fee, a CV, the required personal essays, three letters of recommendation, official transcripts, and graduate exam scores. Creighton University accepts GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT, or MAT test scores, or applicants can provide proof of success in graduate school. Students who do not have graduate test scores or proof of success in graduate school can be admitted provisionally.
No work experience required to apply. International students must provide proof of English language proficiency and submit proof of available finances through the required form.
Study Plan: Courses are offered in eight-week terms. Students in the MS program can graduate in 18 months with the accelerated track or in 24 to 29 months non-accelerated. Students can complete the graduate certificate in one year. The MS in health care ethics includes a hands-on practicum experience in which students develop a plan to address an ethical issue at the practicum site. A capstone course gives them the opportunity to integrate learned concepts from the MS program with the development of a scholarly product focused on a theme from their previous course material. Students may begin the program in January, May or August.
Curriculum: The Creighton University MS in health care ethics consists of 33 credits, which includes 30 credits of core courses and at least three credits of electives. Core courses include: health policy, research ethics, scholarly reading and writing, law and health care ethics, theories of justice, social and cultural contexts of health care, philosophical bioethics, practical ethics in health care settings, a practicum, and a capstone course. Electives include public health ethics, Catholic bioethics, ethical aspects of end-of-life care, rescue and transplantation, and oral health care at the intersection of professional and business ethics. Students may also complete an independent study in health care ethics.
The graduate certificate includes 15 credits. Scholarly reading and writing is the only required course. The rest are electives such as health policy, social and cultural contexts of health care, theories of justice, research ethics, law and health care ethics, and more. Students may apply the credits earned from the graduate certificate to the full MS degree.
Online Experience: Creighton University uses BlueLine as its online learning management system. New students complete an online orientation to familiarize them with the BlueLine system and available resources. All courses are asynchronous and student/faculty interaction takes place through online discussion boards and activities. Assignments and course expectations are clearly posted so professionals can balance work, family, and graduate school.
Students must have at least Windows 7 or Mac Yosemite, a high-speed internet connection, and a microphone. All students receive up to five free copies of Office 365 to download onto their computers for use. All students are assigned an academic coach for the duration of the program. Technical support is provided 24/7 through a designated myIT support team.
On-Site Requirements: There are no onsite requirements as the program is 100 percent online.
