Governors State University Online MHA
Governors State University (GovState) offers a hybrid MHA program that can be completed in as few as two to 2.5 years full-time. Four courses are offered online, while the other courses take place during late afternoons and evenings. Start dates land twice yearly in the fall and spring.
The mission and vision of the MHA program focus on educating typically underserved populations, including women and minoritie,s to prepare them for service in healthcare leadership settings. The program is competency-base,d and values center on excellence, integrity, diversity, innovation, and lifelong learning.
MHA program competencies focus on knowledge of healthcare systems and delivery, communication, business, management, critical thinking, analysis, professionalism, policy, community collaboration, self-awareness, and leadership. MHA students track their growth through three self-assessments throughout the program. These include a pre-program assessment, a candidacy assessment for graduation, and a post-program assessment.
Graduates will be prepared to serve in healthcare management positions in hospitals, medical groups, insurance organizations, and integrated delivery care systems. Job titles may include chief nursing officer, director of hospital human resources, chief financial officer, finance director, or associate hospital administrator.
Applicants to the GovState hybrid MHA must show proficiency in college-level or healthcare statistics, college-level economics or healthcare microeconomics, and college-level or healthcare accounting. If undergraduate coursework did not include healthcare courses, students may also need to complete a college-level healthcare management course and a healthcare policy course.

What to Expect from the Governors State University Online Master of Healthcare Administration
Admission Requirements: Prospective students must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution with a GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale in the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework. No GMAT, GRE, or work experience is required. An interview with the admissions committee may be required.
Application materials include an online application and fee, official transcripts, two letters of recommendation, and a personal statement. Proof of English language proficiency may be required for non-native English speakers, and international transcripts must be evaluated by a certified translation and transcript evaluation entity..
Study Plan: The online MHA begins in the fall and spring. The program can be completed in two to 2.5 years of full-time attendance. Students must complete an MHA orientation to be fully prepared for the program.
Curriculum: The Governors State University online MHA comprises 54 credits. Program prerequisites include the completion of college-level statistics or healthcare statistics; college-level economics or principles of healthcare microeconomics; and college-level accounting or healthcare accounting within five years of application to the MHA program. In addition, if undergraduate study did not involve coursework in healthcare, students must complete college-level healthcare management strategies and policy and politics in healthcare courses.
MHA courses may include foundations of accounting; community health and managerial epidemiology; introduction to healthcare organization; healthcare ethics and policy; economics of healthcare administration; healthcare financial management I-II; organizational theories in healthcare administration; healthcare human resource management; healthcare law; program evaluation and analysis; healthcare quality improvement concepts and tools; strategic planning and marketing for health administration; healthcare management I-II; and healthcare informatics.
Students then choose either the health administration field experience, the six-month internship residency, or the graduate thesis option.
Online Experience: Governors State University uses the Blackboard learning management system (LMS) to manage online and in-person MHA courses. In-person courses take place during late afternoons and evenings.
GovState graduate students have access to the full range of on-campus services, including the academic resource center for tutoring, writing help, and mentoring; computer and IT services; a library; academic advising; the recreation fitness center; mental health services; the center for student engagement and intercultural programs; and disability services.
On-Site Requirements: Students can complete the MHA course on campus or in a hybrid format. Four courses are currently offered online.
